The public is invited to attend an opening ceremony on Saturday, November 18 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the completion of three new outdoor pickleball courts now available for play at Murphy Park, 1600 Veterans Dr.
Members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and city staff have worked together since spring to refurbish and convert old tennis courts for pickleball play.
“Pickleball has nothing to do with pickles,” laughed Parks and Recreation Director Mike Devito in talking about the courts. “Actually, this project enabled us to renovate an area of the park that was dilapidated and rundown, and turn it into something positive with very little funding.”
DeVito said the Taylor Tennis Association donated some of the money for posts and nets to be installed. The City of Taylor paid to have the old courts power-washed without needing to resurface them. Fresh paint and striping completed the job. All said and done, the project cost less than $5,000, according to DeVito.
A representative from the USA Pickleball Association will attend Saturday’s event, as will members of the Greater Austin Pickleball Assocation, and local officials.
